Summer room on top of Mummi's porch. Soon it will be warm enough to spend nights there. Or you can just hide there from everyone to read books and magazines in peace. It has been summer room for Ojanperä's children in all generations. You are able to find their names from the logs on the wall. I haven't tried it out yet and neither has our son. But it is only a matter of time!
The best time for cross-country skiing is right now. We try to go every day if possible. So nice and sunny! It is also warm enough for the cows to be outside. Ämmi and Äiji opened the shed doors few days ago so cows can wonder freely in and out. First day was full of joy for them and the young ones that were born during winter went all crazy!
Let's see how long does it take for all the snow to melt. After that summer comes quickly. Nature is fast in Lapland. Seasonal changes come and go. The pics below are from mid May 2014.
Kaukonen is one of the largest and oldest villages on river Ounasjoki with scenic landscape and about 350 inhabitants. There are cows, two reindeer farms and lots of horses in Kaukonen.
When Kimmo was a young boy there were three small grocery shops in Kaukonen. This is the last one that was operational but it has been closed since 2001. Now the closest grocery shops are in Kittilä about 20 km away. In Lapland you get used to distances and you just need to plan ahead a little bit better.
An opposite side a cross the road from Mummola there's elementary school and day care where our son goes for few times a week. There's an ice hockey rink and a possibility to play football. There is also a playground for smaller kids which has been nice for us.
From here you can read about the local events and museum exhibitions. Särestöniemi-museum is really worth to visit.
